No Candidate is Perfect

I’ve been asked by some people why I haven’t criticized Bobby Jindal regarding
his vote FOR the House Farm Act of 2007 (H.R. 2419). I did mention Jindal’s vote as “questionable” a couple weeks ago, but certainly did not criticize it in my usual, “What the heck?” tone.

One reason is that I was awaiting a response as to why he voted for it. Of course, we do know the obvious reason, he’s running for Governor and didn’t want to alienate the corn farmer vote, but I wanted to wait and see if there was another reason.

However, since I hadn’t received an answer, I’m going to assume it was political pandering. After all, even Congressmen such as Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Charles Boustany (R-LA), who broke away from Republicans to vote AGAINST CAFTA to protect local farmers, voted against the Democrat’s farm bill.

So was this a bad vote by Jindal in my opinion? Yes. It was a horrible choice, as it increases the subsidies on corn at a time when corn is reaching its highest demands, causing the price of everything from milk to beef to cooking oil to escalate.

But is that vote going to cause me to change who I support for Governor? Certainly not. Bobby Jindal is by FAR the best gubernatorial candidate, certainly heads and shoulder above a guy who can’t decide if he wants to be a Republican or Democrat and another guy who thinks good economic policy is to impose witch-hunt taxes on one of the few prospering industries in Louisiana.

Look at the 2008 Presidential Election. Anyone who reads this site knows that I am a big fan of Congressman Duncan Hunter. He is my choice for the next president of the United States. Other than Ron Paul on domestic issues, no other candidate, in my opinion, comes close to matching the ideas, political ideology, and credentials of Duncan Hunter.

However, Duncan Hunter loves his earmarks, especially when it comes to military spending. Of course, I can think of worse things to splurge taxpayer money on than our military, but nevertheless, I believe Hunter is wrong, and I believe all these earmarks need to be done away with ASAP.

But my disliking of Hunter taking advantage of congressional earmarks does not cancel out his military experience and record, his record on illegal immigration, protecting American jobs, support of the Fair Tax, and his canny to tell it like it is. Duncan Hunter is a politician just like the rest of them in D.C., but he is a no B.S. politician.

So, no politician is going to be perfect. For crying out loud, they’re POLITICIANS. However, I personally believe that Bobby Jindal is by far the best person running for Governor of Louisiana, and Duncan Hunter is by far the best person running for President of the United States.

The GOP has Lost It, Or at Least Lost Me

The Republican Party of Iowa released the results of their extremely popular straw poll yesterday.

Mitt Romney was the winner, Mike Huckabee, second, and Sam Brownback, third. My personal choice, Duncan Hunter, finished eight, and third to last just ahead of John McCain and John Cox.

But come on!! Sam Brownback third?? And ahead of Duncan Hunter and John McCain.

What is wrong with our “mainstream” Republicans? We are in the middle of a War on Terror. Fighting terrorists and stopping illegal immigration, which does pose a terror threat to the U.S., should be the most important issues in this election. Duncan Hunter and John McCain lead the Republican field in military experience and knowledge, while Sam Brownback has ZIP. Duncan Hunter has lead the fight to secure our borders, while Sam Brownback enthusiastically supported the Kennedy-McCain-Bush-LaRaza immigration “reform” bill.

Am I missing something here? We know John McCain is soft on illegal immigration, but his military experience trumps that of Mitt Romney, Sam Brownback, and Rudy Giuliani, three guys who lack military experience AND who are either soft and/or complete flip-flops on illegal immigration.

Mitt Romney, the winner of the poll, is nothing but a Republican version of John Kerry, and Sam Brownback is nothing but a religious Right conservative, nothing else of substance to offer.

I know many Republicans are mad at McCain for his stances on campaign finance reform and illegal immigration. But campaign finance reform can’t destroy our country. Terrorism can. Having no real border/immigration enforcement can. At least John McCain has the record to serve our country well in one of those two important battles. Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Sam Brownback have none.

As for Mike Huckabee, I find myself warming up to him. He appears to have a decent stance on illegal immigration. However, his a time of war, I do question in military knowledge.

Regardless, Duncan Hunter and John McCain certainly deserves better than 8th and 9th place, unless the GOP powers that be are content to go forth with their heads up their rears.

As for this Conservative Cajun, barring someone like Hunter, or even better,
Col. David Hunt as the V.P. mate (I’d actually prefer Hunt over Hunter for President, but he’s not running), it will be extremely hard, maybe impossible, to bring myself to vote for Romney, Brownback, or Guiliani for President, even if the Democrat nominee is Hillary. That Constitution Party has some good ideas.

Republican voters are still voters, and as such susceptible to bad judgement. A pundit recently noted that Tancredo has been saying some very wacky, irresponsible things about immigration and war, whereas Hunter has been pretty measured and level-headed throughout. Well, see where that gets you in these polls.

Brownback spent considerable treasure to get those 2000 or so people to Ames. McCain and Hunter didn't. C'est tout. Huckabee surprised a lot of people, I'll say, but let's not make too much of Iowans, lest we make the same mistake the '04 Dems did and let the Iowans dictate our primary vote.

Romney ain't so bad. Maybe few will appreciate it, but he didn't spend his entire life in gov't and has a track record of successful turnaround of failing ventures, namely a ton of businesses, the winter Olympics in Utah, and the State of Massachussets of all places.

I like Hunter and have a ton of respect for McCain, but it's too early for me to pick (and especially contribute). I feel bad that guys like Tancredo and Brownback are ahead of guys with military experience like Hunter and McCain.

I since your frustration with the Iowa strawpoll. Huckabee somehow got the Fair Tax Group to provide many busses for his supporters and the fact that he and Brownhack have been heavily campaigning in Iowa for the social conservative voters worked out very well for both of them. It will be interesting to see if Huckabee can translate this from a broke campaign. I believe if Hunter can stay in he could do well in the western states. Although I am pulling for Ron Paul, I would vote for Hunter but hardly anyone else running in the 2 major parties.

I just read where Ron Paul has placed third in the Illinois Republican Straw Poll http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2007/08/sweet_blog_extra_romney_wins_i.html
If Ron Paul continues gaining grass roots then you will need to look at him harder.
After all he the only person running with any legacy of the Goldwater Republicans which Reagan was. Goldwater's son is a strong supporter of Paul. It appears that Tommy Thompson's brother, a popular and leading libertarian Republican in Wisconsin is about to endorse Paul since Thompson has pulled out of the race.
Time will tell, but it is amazing what the internet is doing for politics. It is allowing politics to by-pass the gates and switches of the MSM and empower many more voices.

That straw poll was absolutely meaningless. The only thing it should was who paid the most money for people to vote as the candidates actually paid for each person's transportation and registration fee.

Romney spent over $2mil to get the votes he got. Hunter, McCain, and Giulliani chose not to participate thus didn't spend any money which accounts for their low percentage.

Paul and Brownback spent quite a bit, so there low showings are definite bad signs. Huckabee spent very little in comparison, so his good showing is actually the story of the poll.

"That straw poll was absolutely meaningless."
No, it served its purpose process of eliminating candidates without support like Tommy Thompson. In addition it started the process of which candidates social conservatives would coalesce around.
While Huckabee did well in Iowa with it’s big social conservative base, he will have a tough row to hoe outside of the Iowa/Kansas bible belt.

I don't share the negative view you have of our current Republican field. McCain is in trouble because he has spent too many years trying to be the Democrats and news media's favorite Republican and it has come back to bite him. I agree that he is a military hero but I don't think you have to be a military veteran to be a strong commander-in-chief (Ronald Reagan proved that).

As for Duncan Hunter, he is a good man and effective congressman. But, traditionally, Americans don't vote for house members for President (I think James Polk in the mid-1800's was the last). Any of the higher profile candidates (Giuliani, Thompson, Romney) would be vastly superior to any Democrat running although all 3 have big strengths and weaknesses. IMHO, Giuliani would be very strong on terrorism and defense; but his positions on social issues and his personal life could create problems. Romney was a strong and effective Republican governor in a very liberal Democratic state; but, I agree there has been way too much flip-flopping on issues. His religous beliefs should not matter but they might when people are behind a booth curtain. Thompson certainly has charisma and many conservatives are drawn to him. However, he did not have a distinguished Senate career really and he has done his share of social issue flip-flopping as well.

My last point is this: don't help elect Hillary or another Democrat by throwing your vote away on the Constitution Party or another fringe group. The Republican party has its issues but any Republican running is far and away better than any Democrat. We can slug it out in the primaries but hopefully come together after the nomination. Please keep this in mind and thanks for letting me ramble.

Ron Paul wins by a landslide Alabama straw pole. The ideas he is campaigning for are resonating with more and more people.

By the way Ron Paul wins a New Hampshire strawpoll, thats 2 today.

The following is an excellent interview with California State Senator Tom McClintock (one of Hunter's constituents) who interviews Ron Paul.

I used to think that voting 3rd party was throwing away my vote, until I've seen how our "popular" Republican and Democrat leaders are so much alike it drives me crazy. It seems their number one priority is getting elected, hence, no real reform and enforcement of illegal immigration.

I voted for President Bush in 2004 b/c I felt, "He's an idiot, but Kerry's a bigger idiot. I guess we'll just try and keep bigger idiot out of the White House."

What happened after '04? Bush gives the finger to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast by threatening to veto Bobby Jindal's offshore royalty sharing bill, he's trying to sell the country out to illegal alien votes and cheap labor, and he continues to be best buddies with Saudi Arabia. I'm tired of settling for the better of two pandering politicians.

David R:

I appreciate you reading and commenting, but please, this isn't your free forum to keep pasting promotions about Ron Paul. I like Paul alot on domestic issues. But you know what irritates me the most about him? His supporters who go on every message board, Myspace, blog, etc. and just start copying and pasting junk.
